Smackdown Review 9-4-09

SMACKDOWN SEPTEMBER 4, 2009

OPENING VIDEO

We begin with a recap of last week's main event featuring CM Punk retaining his World Heavyweight Championship in a steel cage match over Jeff Hardy. Hardy says his good bye and then gets nailed by CM Punk.

SEGMENT 1: PUNK PROMO

We open the show with... JEFF HARDY!? But I thought he was gone... and so he is... it's CM PUNK dressed as Jeff Hardy. Boy did everyone in the audience eat it all up and are PISSED that Punk is the one in the ring. CM Punk's heel turn has been the best thing this year, it's as almost as big as Chris Jericho's heel turn of last year. I wonder, who's next? Now, to focus on the future without Jeff Hardy: The Undertaker. Punk does a great job of leaving Jeff Hardy behind and challenging Taker to show Punk what he has. The promo is what they needed to feed the feud as it's been nonexistent and the contest is only about two weeks away I believe. Though,  Undertaker alone makes a feud epic in his own right just by his presence (case and point: Summer Slam). Punk slowly introduces the move he'll defeat The Undertaker with, the Anaconda Vice. With that, Matt "Mr. Version 2.0 Failed" Hardy comes out and charges the ring getting him some of CM Punk. They brawl for a few until the Refs separate them. (Announced for later Punk v. Hardy non-title).

We see the announcement afterwards that John Morrison will face Rey Mysterio for the IC title.

RECAP

Kane beats up Rey last week and then Khali making the save. Announced for BREAKING POINT: Kane v. The Great Khali SINGAPORE CANE MATCH.

MATCH 1: KANE & MIKE KNOX V. FINLAY & THE GREAT KHALI w/RANJI SANJIH

-typical tag match featuring four feuding man. This is meant to only further the storyline between the-now-intelligent Knox and Finlay also to give Kane and Khali a chance to fight each other. Match ends with Finlay hitting Knox with the Shillelagh.

-Winner: Finlay and Great Khali

SEGMENT 2: TEDDY LONG & VINCE McMAHON

Shameless plug by Teddy Long and Vince McMahon on the RISE AND FALL OF WCW. Vince tells Long that he can get lucky if he's lucky enough to get lucky. Odd segment that just went nowhere other than to plug the WCW DVD.

GRAPHIC

CM Punk v. Matt Hardy tonight. Then, the return of The Undertaker.

SEGMENT 3: BACKSTAGE PROMO

Maria and Eve talking about facing Natalya. Michelle McCool enters with the WOMEN'S CHAMPIONSHIP talking about Maria and Ziggler. Then we get Melina to make the save and scare off the injured McCool. Melina gets into Maria's face about Ziggler to which Maria tells Melina to "stay out of [her] business". (A full heel turn is in the works for Maria).

MATCH 2: INTERCONTINENTAL CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH

(The suspended Mysterio drops the title to Morrison)

A classic story of a wrestler that wants it versus a wrestler that has it. John Morrison defeats Rey Mysterio in a compelling tale. Mysterio has battled the likes of Chris Jericho, Dolph Ziggler, JBL, and even Kane to retain (or recapture) the Intercontinental Championship. But don't forget about Morrison having defeated Shelton Benjamin and Jeff Hardy on separate occasions (the former being in a triple threat match involving Carlito) just 3 years ago as the owner of the title himself. That was when he was just working his stride. He elevated from there and he's proven he is ready to go. With the marking of over 30 years upon us the Intercontinental title was now in the hands (once again) of a Tough Enough winner, John Hennigan.

-Winner and NEW INTERCONTINENTAL CHAMPION: John Morrison

RECAP

Drew McIntyre attacks R-Truth in the middle of the ring before the start of a match.

SEGMENT 4: R-TRUTH AND DREW McINTYRE

"WHASSUP!" "WHASSUP!": the catchy tune from R-Truth excites the to their feet. The once Pretty Ricky (soon to return I hear...) gets set for some one-on-one action. Before his opponent can be introduced Truth's given a rude awakening (remember when that use to be a finisher?) by getting his lights taken out thanks to Mr. McIntyre. After his beat down McIntyre gets on the mic and says his reasoning behind his attacks are that he, not Truth, has the pedigree to progress further in this business. (And with that  ladies and gentlemen we have the start of a storyline).

MATCH 3: EVE AND MARIA V. NATALYA AND LAYLA

As Maria's eventual heel turn looms she teams with fan favorite and a regular now on the hit segment "Word Up!", Eve to battle a legacy in her ownright: Natalya and Diva Search winner Layla. The match is the transitional filler match that's given ample amount of time to tell a short sweet story that was summed up by Jim Ross at the end of the match by saying, "...but [Eve] never pinned Natalya". Now we have the focal point of the next Hart Dynasty/Cryme Tyme feud: the Divas.

SEGMENT 5: BACKSTAGE MATT HARDY PROMO

Hardy will not be seeking revenge tonight he wants to wreck torture on the one they call Punk for what he did to his little brother. Matt is prepared to do battle with the World Heavyweight Championship.

MATCH 4: CM PUNK V. MATT HARDY

A brutal contest that was about dominance (did I mention Punk's going out with Matt Hardy's ex-Lita?). These guys tore into each other as both knew that no tangible thing was on the line, just pride. The fact that Punk's the World Heavyweight Champion, however, gives Hardy more of an incentive to beat Punk because it will lead to a future title match. Punk knowingly gives all he's go to Hardy and this is revealed near the end of the match when Hardy grabs a steel chair and opens it around Hardy's neck. The defenseless (at this point) Hardy is mere seconds away from getting his neck broken at the hands of Punk. Then...THE LIGHTS TURN OFF...that all too familiar toll bell chimes...THE LIGHTS TURN BACK ON...and...THE UNDERTAKER makes his remarkable return to Smackdown. With that he saves Hardy and takes out Punk, ramming him into the ring post. He's not done yet, though. 'Taker grabs Punk by the neck and proceeds to chokeslam him onto the announce table. Punk's left laying there, Hardy's attending to his wounds, and The Undertaker is left standing tall and moving forward to win the World Heavyweight Championship.

Winner: NO CONTEST.

Overall:

Punk's been able to get himself over as a legitimate heel by really cutting into people's beliefs on other superstars, like Jeff Hardy. Now that he's out of the picture, the suspension of Rey Mysterio, and the fact that neither Matt Hardy nor John Morrison can carry the ball right now for the WWE, in a time where Face power is lacking, so the next best move would be to throw The Undertaker back into the picture. The WWE was in scramble to return a Face that can draw, much like they did over on Raw with Shawn Michaels. The end result is that we get a match we've yet to see: CM Punk v. The Undertaker. I'm stoked.

Another thing that stoke me as odd was the fact that the WWE Unified Tag Team Champions weren't mentioned on the show. I know they're feuding with Mark Henry and MVP but they have to be squeezed in somewhere since they're the dominating Tag Team.

Rey Mysterio went on a 30 day, without pay, vacation and dropped the title to one of the bright stars in the WWE in John Morrison. What disappoints me is (A: the wellness policy violation and B:) that we don't get to see Dolph Ziggler eventually win the Intercontinental Championship over Mysterio. Instead this leads to a series of matches (which sucks for Ziggler since he'll be doing some jobbing) between Ziggler and Morrison until Morrison drops the title at the (I think) end of the year. This brings me to my earlier comment about Maria's heel turn. This allows for Maria to turn on Melina (the only Diva that's been trying to 'look out' for Maria) and team Maria with Ziggler to battle Melina and Morrison. That would spice things up a bit more on Smackdown for all four of these stars.

My Grade: B

I kNow This Because I'm A Smark!
